Description:
Anatomy, blood collection equipment and basic venipuncture technique, including procedural complications, for laboratory and nursing staff who perform phlebotomy, and phlebotomy students.
Learning Objectives:
  1. Discuss the function and structure of veins; identify the names and locations of the veins most suitable for phlebotomy.
  2. List equipment and supplies needed to collect blood and discuss the correct use of each.
  3. Describe the steps in performing a venipuncture procedure.
  4. Discuss techniques and equipment used to minimize biohazard exposure.
  5. Identify procedural errors and discuss remedies for each.
  6. Identify complications associated with blood collection and discuss how to appropriately respond when each occurs.
  7. Recognize suboptimal specimens and their effect on the quality of laboratory test results.
