Description:
Routine patient care, including services provided by the clinical laboratory, generates large volumes of data that live in laboratory information systems and electronic medical records.  This wealth of data can be used to improve laboratory operations and help the lab provide better service for its patients. This webinar will introduce basic concepts about the processes of retrieving laboratory-related data, and through a series of examples, illustrate how this data can be analyzed to provide insight into improving laboratory operations.
Learning Objectives:
  1. Define basic data types, and understand the tradeoffs of strictly enforced data types in information systems.
  2. Understand the fundamental properties of a relational database, and contrast them with other data structures commonly encountered in laboratory information systems
  3. Describe how laboratory data might be transformed when it moves across information systems
  4. Describe at least one case where data outside of the laboratory information system can be helpful.
