Description:
Biochemical tests can be an effective diagnostic tool for many genetic disorders, but they are often underutilized. We discuss different methodologies of biochemical genetic testing including biomarker, analyte, and enzyme testing. We review testing algorithms that use biochemical tests as a cost-effective and efficient means for establishing a diagnosis, and describe how biochemical genetic tests can be incorporated in utilization management of genetic testing.
Learning Objectives:
  1. Describe different methodologies of biochemical genetic testing and when they are used.
  2. List testing strategies for biochemical genetic diseases.
  3. Identify opportunities for using biochemical genetic tests in a utilization management program.
