Description:
Many lab stewardship projects begin with collecting data about ordering patterns and outcomes from the EMR. What happens when providers go around the core laboratory to order patient-billed lab tests directly from uncontracted reference labs? Orders entered and results retrieved via unvetted portals are not well documented in patient charts. In this webinar, we identify ten risks of off-book ordering practices, key factors that contribute to the problem, and tips to help investigate and get test ordering back on track.
Learning Objectives:
  1. Describe how and why providers bypass the EMR to order laboratory testing.
  2. Identify three risks to patients and laboratories when laboratory testing is ordered outside the EMR.
  3. Discuss ways to discover and mitigate non-standard ordering practices.
