Description:
This lecture, presented by Dr. Torgerson will provide a basic overview of the immune system, then discuss basic laboratory testing that evaluates the various compartments of the immune system. He will also discuss modern laboratory testing approaches for immunodeficiency syndromes including screening tests, gene sequencing, and flow cytometry-based testing and will discuss how these are impacting the identification and care of patients with immune-mediated diseases.
Learning Objectives:
  1. Describe the basic structure and function of the human immune system.
  2. Identify and interpret fundamental laboratory tests used to evaluate different compartments of the immune system, with emphasis on screening for immunodeficiencies.
  3. Explain the role of modern diagnostic techniques—including gene sequencing and flow cytometry—in the detection and management of immunodeficiency syndromes and immune-mediated diseases.
